3. HISTORIC & HEROIC MEMORIES & EXPERIENCES
KALAVRYTA 15-17 SEPTEMBER
MSM – Master in Services Management, Athens University of Economics & Business
The Holocaust of Kalavryta: 80 years ago, the town of Kalavryta suffered a holocaust which was one of the cruelest atrocities of the World War II in Europe.
Within hours, at 9 am, on December 13, 1943, the first German soldiers of the Wehrmacht 117th Jägerdivision appeared on the town’s main road. Operation Kalavryta had just started. The German soldiers had orders to assemble everybody at the local school. All women and children were locked in the school while all men and boys, aged 14 and over, were lined up and driven to nearby Kappi hillside. Over 700 men and boys were murdered.
While women and children were locked in the school, German soldiers were burning houses, churches, and public buildings. The heroic town of Kalavryta was burned to ashes in less than 3 hours. Only 13 of its inhabitants survived just to keep the memory of their beloved ones alive, along with the shocking testimonies describing the German atrocities.
When women and children managed to free themselves from the flaming school, witnessed that the rest of the town was set ablaze, and their fathers, brothers, and sons were butchered.

5. THE RACK RAILWAY EXPERIENCE
The Diakopto – Kalavryta – Diakopto – Kalavryta Rack Railway (Οδοντωτός) is an amazing tourist experience. It’s a train that can reach high altitudes and operate on steep grades, through territories of unique interest and spectacular views. MSM – Master in Services Management, Athens University of Economics & Business experienced this unparalleled journey that lasted for about one hour (each way). The rack railway runs through the gorge of Vouraikos and the village of Zachlorou. It covers the 22 kilometer journey, traveling at a speed of 30-40km/h when moving along the regular rack and 6-15km/h when moving along the toothed racks.
6. MSM’s pilgrimage to the Historic & Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra.
MSM – Master in Services Management, Athens University of Economics & Business
Agia Lavra is a historic monastery near Kalavryta. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the Peloponnese, and was built in 961 AD, on Chelmos Mountain, at an altitude of 961 meters, and can be described as the symbolic birthplace of modern Greece.
It was burnt to the ground in 1585 by the Turks. It was rebuilt in 1600, and burnt again in 1715 and in 1826 by the armies of Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt. In 1850 after the rebirth of modern Greece, the building was completely rebuilt. The monastery was burned down by German forces in 1943.
It is famously linked with the Greek War of Independence, since it was here that the call for Eleftheria I Thanatos (Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος) was first heard on 25 March 1821, launching the revolution against the Ottoman Empire. That day, Bishop Germanos of Patras performed a doxology and administered an oath to the Peloponnesian fighters. The revolutionary flag was raised by the Bishop under the plane tree just outside the gate of the monastery.
